Keratin vs Protein Treatment: Which Does Your Hair Need?
One is the king of smoothing, the other is all about strength. Here is how keratin and protein hair treatments compare – and which to choose if your hair is damaged.
Quick answer
Keratin vs protein treatment comes down to your main hair goal. Keratin is the stronger smoothing treatment – sleek, frizz-free hair for up to 6 months, AED 420 – 895 in Dubai, 2 – 4 hours. A protein treatment focuses on strengthening weak or damaged hair while smoothing and adding shine – it lasts 3 – 5 months, takes 2 – 3 hours and starts from AED 475.
“Should I do keratin or protein?” is one of the most common questions in our Dubai salon – and online, where the two names are often used as if they were the same thing. They are not. Understanding keratin vs protein treatment helps you book the treatment your hair actually needs, rather than the one your friend had.
In this guide we compare both treatments, explain which is better for damaged hair, and clear up the confusion around “hair botox”.
What is the difference between keratin and protein treatment?
Hair is made of protein, and keratin is the main protein in it – so in a sense both treatments “feed” the hair with protein. The difference is in what each treatment is designed to do.
Keratin treatment: smoothing first
A Brazilian keratin treatment is designed to smooth. The formula fills gaps in the cuticle and is sealed with a flat iron, so frizz disappears, curls relax and hair dries sleek and glossy. It is the choice for maximum smoothness and humidity control, lasting up to 6 months. Your specialist will tell you when to wash afterwards – usually after 48 – 72 hours.
Protein treatment: strength first
A protein hair treatment is designed to rebuild strength in hair that feels weak, dry or over-processed, while also smoothing and adding shine. Clients usually choose it when their hair needs care as much as it needs smoothing. It lasts 3 – 5 months, and when new growth appears you can refresh just the roots with a root protein touch-up (AED 330) instead of repeating the full treatment.

Damaged hair
Protein or keratin for damaged hair?
If your hair snaps when you brush it, feels stretchy or rough when wet, or has been bleached and heat-styled for years, it is asking for strength before anything else. In that case protein is usually the better first choice: it smooths and adds shine while focusing on making the hair feel stronger.
If your hair is in reasonable condition but frizzy, puffy or curly, keratin will give you the bigger smoothing result and the longer-lasting finish.
And if your hair is extremely damaged – breaking at the ends or after heavy lightening – we may recommend an Olaplex treatment (from AED 265, about 45 minutes) first to repair broken bonds, then smoothing once the hair is ready.
Make your choice
Choose keratin if… or protein if…

Choose keratin if…
- Frizz and humidity are your biggest problems
- You want sleek, straighter hair that is quick to blow-dry
- You want the longest result – up to 6 months
- Your hair is in reasonably good condition
- You can wait usually 48 – 72 hours before washing

Choose protein if…
- Your hair feels weak, dry or over-processed
- You colour, highlight or heat-style often
- You want smoothing and strength in one treatment
- You like the idea of a root touch-up between full treatments
- Results of 3 – 5 months suit your routine
Keratin vs hair botox: what is “hair botox”?
“Hair botox” is a salon name, not a medical treatment – it contains no botulinum toxin. The term is usually used for a deep-conditioning “filler” treatment that fills porous, damaged areas of the hair with conditioning ingredients so it feels softer, looks shinier and is easier to manage. It generally smooths less than keratin and does not give the same frizz control or longevity.
We do not offer a hair botox service. We specialise in keratin, Brazilian Blowout and protein smoothing. If what you are really looking for is deep conditioning and shine without smoothing, these are the closest choices on our menu:
- Signature Hair Spa – a deep-conditioning ritual with scalp massage, AED 169, about 60 minutes.
- Olaplex treatment – repairs broken bonds in coloured or damaged hair, from AED 265, about 45 minutes.

How our specialists help you choose
Every appointment starts with a consultation. Your specialist looks at your hair’s texture, elasticity, colour history and how it behaves in humidity, then asks how you want it to look and how much time you spend styling. Sometimes the answer is keratin, sometimes protein, and sometimes a few weeks of repair first. You can also send a photo on WhatsApp before booking and we will advise.

In short
Key takeaways
- Keratin = smoothing first: up to 6 months, AED 420 – 895, 2 – 4 hours.
- Protein = strength first: 3 – 5 months, from AED 475, 2 – 3 hours.
- Protein is usually better for weak or damaged hair; very damaged hair may need Olaplex first.
- Hair botox is a deep-conditioning treatment, not a smoother – try Hair Spa or Olaplex instead.
- Both keratin and protein are available in salon or at home across the UAE.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between keratin and protein treatment?
A keratin treatment is mainly a smoothing treatment: it tames frizz and gives sleek, straighter hair for up to 6 months. A protein treatment focuses on rebuilding strength in weak or damaged hair while smoothing and adding shine, and lasts 3 to 5 months.
Is protein or keratin better for damaged hair?
For weak, over-processed or breaking hair, a protein treatment is usually the better choice because it focuses on strength. If hair is extremely damaged, your specialist may recommend Olaplex first to repair it before any smoothing treatment.
Which lasts longer, keratin or protein treatment?
Keratin usually lasts longer – up to 6 months – while a protein treatment lasts 3 to 5 months. Sulfate-free aftercare and fewer washes help both last as long as possible.
How much does a protein hair treatment cost in Dubai?
Our protein hair treatment starts from AED 475 for short hair, AED 630 for medium, AED 840 for long and AED 950 for very long hair. A root protein touch-up for new regrowth is AED 330. Prices include VAT and are the same at home.
What is hair botox? Is it the same as keratin?
No. In salons, “hair botox” is a name for a deep-conditioning filler treatment that fills porous areas of the hair to make it softer and shinier. It contains no botulinum toxin and is not the same as a keratin smoothing treatment.
Do you offer hair botox?
We do not offer a hair botox service. We specialise in keratin, Brazilian Blowout and protein smoothing. If you want deep conditioning without smoothing, our Signature Hair Spa or an Olaplex treatment is the closest choice.
Can I have a protein treatment on coloured or bleached hair?
Protein is often chosen for coloured hair that feels weak or dry. Very bleached or breaking hair may need Olaplex repair first – your specialist will check the condition of your hair before recommending a treatment.
Can I get a keratin or protein treatment at home?
Yes. Our female specialists bring everything to your home, hotel or office across Dubai and the UAE, at the same prices as the salon and with no home service fee.
